National Simultaneous Storytime - 25 May, 2016

National Simultaneous Storytime is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. On Wednesday 25 May we will be joining schools from across the country by sharing I Got This Hat written by Jol and Kate Temple and illustrated by Jon Foye. The story takes the reader on a trip around the world, through the medium of hats. To celebrate, we'd love students to wear a crazy or interesting hat to school.   It is bound to be another fabulous experience. Chromebook Information Night

Thank you to all those who attended our information session on Chromebooks at the last P&C meeting. It was a productive session where parents were able to access the new technology and get answers to some important questions regarding purchasing Chromebooks.  As a result of the meeting and effectiveness of the trial in 5/6, Lake Heights will be continuing to invest in Chromebooks by purchasing an additional class set of the technology. Thank you to all of the parents who came along to the information night last Monday. We hope you enjoyed experiencing this fantastic teaching and learning tool.

Lunch Orders

We're excited to announce that lunch orders are now available every Monday and Friday. See below for more information.

Well done to our Year 3 and 5 students, who sat their NAPLAN tests last week. Results will be available later in the year.

Footy Colours Day

We raised $ to support the Fight Cancer Foundation

Last Friday, we donned our footy colours to help raise money for the Fight Cancer Foundation. Our SRC did a fantastic job of coordinating the day, painting faces and colouring hair in the colours of our favourite footy teams. We raised just under $200 and had a great day.  Click here or check out our Facebook page for more highlights from the day.

Our P&C also hosted their first fundraiser of the year with a lunchtime sausage sizzle that went down a treat. Thank you to Lisa Ramsay, Tracy Beohm, Julie Churcher, Belinda Chase and Jess Anketell for giving up their time to run organise and cook the sausage sizzle. They raised a whopping $245. What a fantastic effort!
'The Rocks' Excursion - Year 4/5 and Year 5/6
Year 4/5 and Year 5/6 have an exciting opportunity to visit The Rocks in Sydney, to participate in a program which allows them to investigate and piece together information about people who lived in the area during the 1800s. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to gain hands-on inquiry skills, which are an integral part of the new History syllabus.
The excursion is next Monday 23 May, which is now only 1 week away. Information notes have been sent home but spares are available from classroom teachers if necessary. The permission slip and payment ($30) should be sent to the office as soon as possible.
Friday Lunch Orders
Great news! Our popular lunch order service has been extended to include Fridays as well as Mondays, from this week. New order forms are available in each classroom, but old slips can still be used - the prices haven’t changed. Just make your selections and place the order with payment into an envelope or ziplock bag and drop it into the class Lunch Order Bag on either day.
Cooking for Groups
Groups are back in full swing and students have a great selection of activities to choose from this term, ranging from PSSA dragon tag and Southern Stars to Science and Mural Painting. Our cooking group got straight into things last Tuesday, whipping up a new take on Spaghetti Bolognese. The group, which focuses on teaching cooking skills, food safety and nutrition, made their own fettuccine pasta from scratch. Students loved rolling the pasta and seeing it cut into strips. To go with the pasta, students cooked a kangaroo bolognese. It was the first taste of kangaroo for many students but with lots of second helpings dished out, it was definitely a hit! Kangaroo is an excellent source of lean protein, is very affordable and is a sustainable, organic source of meat. It's available from the meat department in most supermarkets.
