Grandparents Day announced, Switch up lunch, Rides Day wrap up: Term 4 | Week 1

Weekly News

Welcome back to Term 4!
We hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday and is ready to start the term feeling refreshed and ready for learning. This term is a busy one with lots of exciting activities planned. It is an especially memorable one for our Year 6 students as they complete their final 10 weeks of their primary schooling.
Switch It Up! Change to lunch and recess

A reminder that this term we are trialling a change in our eating times.

Lunch will now be at 10:55 am and recess will be at the later time of 1:15 pm. It is hoped that by switching our eating times, we will be able to stop our students from being restless and lethargic due to hunger and that they will refuel and re energise their bodies for more productive learning throughout the day.

Lunch orders are still available from the shop once it reopens.

Rides and Fun Day Success

Our Rides and Fun Day last term was a huge success due largely to the hard work of our P&C and the parent volunteers who helped on the stalls. We were blessed with good weather, which allowed  the children to thoroughly enjoy all the rides and activities.

$2,345 was raised as a result of all the hard work and support.

Thank you to all the parents and friends who came along and shared in our afternoon of fun and to everyone who contributed to our cake stall. Thanks also to Barnardos and Our Place Illawarra for providing free face painting and hair spraying.

2018 Kindergarten Transition to School

Our playgroup sessions for next year's Kindergarten students begin next Wednesday morning between 9 and 10:45. Parents/carers are invited to attend these playgroups with their children.

These playgroups are a fun and informal way for future students to meet other children that will be in their class next year. They are also a fantastic opportunity for parents and children to learn more about our school and the teachers. While the playgroups are an optional activity for future Kindergarten students, it would be great to see them at one or more of the playgroups. Our official orientation sessions will take place on Wednesday 15 November (9-10:45)  and Wednesday 22 November (9-11:45). It is expected that all new Kindergarten students attend these. During the first session, the students will spend the morning in a Kindergarten classroom, while their parents attend the Parent Information Session in the Learning Hub. The final orientation session will be particularly exciting as the new Kindergartens will get to spend time with their future Year 6 buddies. If you have any questions regarding the Transition to School program, feel free to call the school or speak to Mrs Ellsmore or Mrs Sernig.
Stewart House Bags

Each year 1,800 public school children visit Stewart House from many parts of NSW and the ACT. During their stay, children participate in educational programs as well as being provided with optometric, dental and medical treatment.

Stewart House needs your support to ensure they can continue to provide these important services to children. You can help by filling up the Stewart House bags with clothing and returning them to school by Tuesday 17 October.

Shop Closed

Just a reminder that the shop is closed this week so there will be no lunch orders.

The shop will reopen on Monday 16 October.

Selective high school application information for Year 7 entry in 2019

Some primary schools across NSW offer places in ‘opportunity classes’ for gifted and talented students in Years 5 and 6. To be considered for placement students must sit the Opportunity Class Placement Test. For information about applying and the placement process go to https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5.

Selective high schools cater for the specific needs of high achieving gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. Selective schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level. Parents apply when the student is in Year 5. The students sit the test in March of Year 6.

To be considered for placement students must sit the Selective High School Placement Test.

Applications for selective high school placement in Year 7 in 2019 open on 10 October 2017 and close on 13 November 2017 at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7.

The Selective High School Placement Test is on 15 March 2018. Year 5 students were given "Intention to Apply" notes today. These are to let the school know if you intend to make an online application. The notification slip needs to be returned by this Friday.

Some selective high schools have vacancies in Years 8 to 12. Applications open in late June for placement the following year. For information about applying and the placement process go to https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/years-8-to-12.

Grandparents Day

They say that grandparents are the best kind of grown ups and at Lake Heights, we know what an important role grandparents play in the lives of our students. Whether it be helping before and after school, cheering on a sporting team or simply being a smiling face and a shoulder to lean on, grandparents have a special part to play. This year, Lake Heights Public School will be joining with many others around the country, to celebrate the vital role grandparents play in our day-to-day lives.

Grandparents are invited to join us at 9:30am for class time together then morning tea. Visit your grandchildren's classes and join in some fun learning and sharing.

Class time starts at 9:30.

Morning tea will be served in the Learning Hub from 10:30am.

To assist with catering, please let us know if you're able to attend by completing the RSVP that children will bring home today.

Spare notes are available at The Hub.

We hope you can join us!

Groove Nation

Unfortunately due to insufficient numbers, Groove Nation has had to be  cancelled this term for Years 3-6.
