Get ready to make a splash!

School swimming carnival on tomorrow!

Students are getting ready to make a splash at our annual swimming carnival tomorrow (Tuesday 13 February). The carnival is for competitors only and will run from 9:30am-12pm at Berkeley Pools. Competitors must be at the pool by 9am to sign on.

Parents and friends are most welcome to join us at the pool. It's school as usual once the carnival is over. Good luck to all of those competing tomorrow. We look forward to hearing your results.

We're saving you some paperwork!

From time to time, class teachers arrange visits to locations that are only a short walking distance from the school. It could be to the lake foreshore, a nearby park or another local interest spot. Activities are usually short and could relate to science investigations, visual arts experiences, fitness or numerous curriculum-related opportunities that are on the other side of the school fence.

A permission note to cover short class outings on foot is coming home with each student today. If all parents are able to give their permission, teachers will be able to take advantage of more nearby learning opportunities without the need for a separate permission note each time.

Separate notes will still be sent home for sporting events and any activity involving transport.

Growth mindset

This year at Lake Heights, you'll be hearing a lot about growth mindset. Carol Dweck, one of the pioneering researchers in this field suggests that growth mindset is the idea that we can grow our brain's capacity to learn and to solve problems.

Instead of giving up when learning is tough, students with a growth mindset tackle challenges because they understand that learning takes a lot of effort. They don't give up when things get difficult, because they have strategies to persevere. They understand that, wherever their starting point, they always have the potential to improve. Class Dojo has a great video series on growth mindset. The videos are only a few minutes long and are worth watching and discussing with your child. It's time start thinking about which high school you'd like to attend in 2019. An expression of interest form will be handed out to students this week. You can indicate your high school preferences by completing this form and returning it to the school office before 16 March.
