Welcome back

Welcome back to what has already been a very busy beginning of term 3. Keep an eye on the website, calendar, Facebook, ClassDojo and newsletters for all the updates for events and activities this term. A number of staff changes have begun at Lake Heights Public School this term.

Our Interventionist, Mrs Denton is on maternity leave, expecting the arrival of their second child any day now. Mrs Denton will return to her support role on day one 2020. We’ll keep you posted on the impending birth.

Mrs Sernig is looking after the Interventionist role, working closely with Mr Hurd on literacy and numeracy priorities for the remainder of this year. Mrs Nicastri is now partnered with Mrs Ellsmore on Kindergarten.

After nearly 40 years with the Education Department and approaching 17 at Lake Heights, I will be retiring on 30 August. During the coming weeks, you will hear about plans for a rides and fun day that I requested for the students on that day. I will have more to say about my years at this wonderful school as the time approaches.

The process for selecting a replacement principal is now underway with approval from the Department for our Director, Bill Field, to form a selection panel of four. On Friday, P&C elected a community representative, Chrissy Pianon and staff have elected Mrs Ellsmore. The two will meet with a principal representative from another school and Mr Field to write an advertisement next Monday. Once advertised online, the process takes upwards of 5-6 weeks. There will be an interim period where Mrs Whyte will relieve as principal from September until the newly selected Principal is able to start.

Every student, every voice

On Wednesday 07 August, we will be holding an open day for Education Week. Everyone is welcome. Come along and join in with the celebrations. The theme this year is "Every Student, Every Voice". It is a celebration of student empowerment and how the NSW public education system gives students the skills they need in order to have and express a voice during their own educational journey and as engaged global citizens.

Footy colours day

We are holding a Footy Colours Day on Monday 05 August to raise money for the Year Six farewell. Dress in your teams' colours and bring along a gold coin donation. What's your favourite team?

Road Safety

This term there is a focus on Road Safety as a part of Personal Development and Health Education lessons. Our school gates are on two very busy roads. Primary School students are vulnerable road users. They are still developing the skills that help them to judge the direction of the sound, and both the speed and distance of vehicles. Please ensure that your child understands the importance of taking care when crossing the road.

The week that was

Follow the link above to watch all of the action at our athletics carnival last week at Croome Road. While you're there, have a look at the other videos from earlier times.

Stewart House

Stewart House clothing appeal bags will be sent home this week. Please return them to the kitchen before Tuesday 13 August. Stewart House is an integrated residential care, school and health screening facility located in Sydney.  There is no other facility like Stewart House worldwide. As services are provided free-of-charge, Stewart House is one of NSW’s oldest and most respected children’s charities. Thank you for supporting this charity.

Reading is my superpower

We are holding a Book Character parade on Tuesday 20 August at 10:30 am  The parade will be followed by a sausage sizzle lunch. Order forms are being sent home this week and are due by Friday 16 August. From 17-23 August 2019, we celebrate Book Week and this year's theme is "Reading is my secret power". Which character will you be? Where's Wally? Peter Pan? Alice in Wonderland?
