Some of our drummers determining group rules so that they can march to the same beat. Happy International Women’s Day. It would be remiss of me not to begin this week’s newsletter by acknowledging the many marvellous women who make up the overwhelming majority of our workforce here at Lake Heights Public School. The theme this year for International Women’s Day is #choosetochallenge. At the heart of this theme is the challenge to celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness against bias, and take action for equality. As an educational institution, I believe we have the greatest power to evoke change for the better. In an age appropriate manner, this week I discussed this with our students in our weekly assembly, and I encourage you to continue the conversation at home. This week, we saw further easing of the restrictions surrounding COVID-19. We must take care not to become complacent, but we can now have our community onsite with more normality. Community members must still sign in each and every time you attend our site for anything other than prompt pickup and drop off, which includes both the online QR method, and manual paper records. Our community must also continue to practise sound hygiene and remain physically distanced. We were able to pivot quickly today in light of this easing to enable some of our community to attend the Cross Country, which was a great success. From here forwards, we can begin planning for community events again, such as assemblies, which we will look to resume again next term pending no re-tightening of the current stance. Last week we had our first drumming session; a new initiative supported by Barnardos for a number of groups of children. You can see one of our groups warming up in the above photo. Following community and student surveys last year, we are striving to provide more extracurricular opportunities for our students. The drumbeats program encourages kids to explore musical concepts, whilst also developing the inter and intrapersonal skills through group conversation and cooperation. The kids I spoke with really enjoyed Week 1, and we thank Barnardos for their ongoing support of our school. Finally, you may have noticed some new signs on our gates last week concerning pedestrian safety. This is always a key focus for us. The children have also been receiving lessons in classes. Please take time to discuss these important messages and signs with your children. Of particular importance is the topic of bike safety. Please make sure children wear helmets and have safely functioning bikes, meaning the bells, reflectors and brakes are all in good working order. Have a great week, Kieren Corbyn, Principal
Cross Country Fun
The sun was shining and the children were smiling as we kicked off our 2021 Cross Country today. It was fantastic to be able to welcome parents back to our school events. Click the link above to see all of the action from Lake Heights Public School's Cross Country today!
Hat Parade
Our Hat Parade is just around the corner and we are getting excited to see sparkles, feathers and glitter flying around the COLA! This year it will be held on the last day of Term 1, Thursday 1st April at 11.35am. Stay tuned next week for a note that outlines more details of the event, but we are looking forward to inviting parents to this fun-filled event.
Harmony Day
Harmony Day celebrates the cohesive and inclusive nature of Australia and promotes a tolerant and diverse society. This year, it is held on Sunday 21st March, however, we will be celebrating it on Friday the 19th March. We invite children to come to school wearing any item of orange as they celebrate the theme 'Everyone Belongs". On this day, children will take part in classroom activities that foster a sense of belonging for everyone and develop respect for cultural and religious diversity.
School Photos
School photos are just around the corner on Thursday 25 March. Please remember to hold on to your photo envelopes and return them to classroom teachers on the morning of the photos.
A congratulations is in order for our Year 6 student, Destin Tausala. Just over a week ago, Destin participated in a sporting trial for Basketball and he was selected into the South Wollongong District Team. Destin is now off to another set of trials at the Snake Pit this week in the hope of being selected into the South Coast Basketball Team. Good luck, Destin.
