‘There is virtue in work and there is virtue in rest. Use both and overlook neither’
  • Alan Cohen
Holiday Progress We resume with students today from two weeks’ rest, revitalised and ready to continue learning. While the school didn’t have children over the past fortnight, that didn’t prevent us from continuing progress. The breaks were very productive for our school. Some very visible changes upon return will be the new signage around our school, the hanging of our 2020 Aboriginal mural, and the addition of new doors in our Hub to make the space even more flexible. Some dying trees were removed to make way for new, healthy specimens, and we also had pest controllers, concreters, electricians, builders and plumbers working on our buildings and grounds to ensure they are conducive to learning in the most efficient way. Mrs Briggs and Mr Samways also tended to our gardens to keep them thriving. In addition to the mural hanging, our new accompanying polos have also arrived. We are firming up a date in coming days to host a small unveiling of both, between 2-3pm, and are hoping to turn a few snags on the BBQ and make an afternoon event of it. During this time, we will also distribute the pre-purchased shirts. If children have adults in attendance, they can stay until 3, but otherwise must leave for home at school end time in their normal fashion. I will confirm the time with Uncle Darren, our artist, and inform our community as soon as possible. I am very proud of these additions to our school and think it is a wonderful way to add to the acknowledgement of the traditional custodians of the lands our school sits upon, the Wadi Wadi People of the Dharawal Nation. We will enjoy the mural every day but plan to wear our new polos on Fridays similar to the special Year 6 shirts which are also recognised as uniform, albeit not every day. On Friday at Midday, we invite our community to join us for a short but formal ANZAC ceremony. We are honoured to be joined by Mr Cyril Parker on behalf of the City of Wollongong RSL sub-Branch. We will organise a wreath to be laid on behalf of the school, but if parents would like to send flowers from a garden in with children, there will also be a time for this to occur mid ceremony. It is imperative we continue to acknowledge the sacrifice of our servicemen and women well into the future, and schools provide an excellent platform. Speaking of assemblies, as COVID restrictions continue to ease, we are planning to re-establish assemblies, and we will share this information with our community. It does, however, remain vital that you use QR codes and manual sign in processes when you are onsite because despite relaxing rules around caps and space, rules remain firm on the need for organisations to maintain accurate attendance records for any contact tracing that may be required.  On Wednesday at 2pm, we will be practising a ‘Lock Down’ Procedure. This is where staff members lock and secure rooms and students seek shelter quietly for a short period of time. Do not be alarmed if you hear audible tones throughout the community or your child shares their experience. We drill these processes regularly to ensure they are effective if required. A lock down might be used for example if a dangerous dog entered the grounds or similar. This morning in our weekly GotYa assembly, I was delighted to announce 5/6 as the term winners for Term 1. It is great to see our most senior students leading the way. Similarly, I acknowledged 29 students for 100% attendance across Term 1. This is a monumental achievement, so please join me in congratulating your student/s if they brought home an award. Have a great week. Kieren Corbyn, Principal
100% Attendance- Term1
At Lake Heights Public School, attendance is a priority as regular attendance at school is essential to assist students to maximise their potential. Today we acknowledge 29 students who had 100% attendance during Term 1.
ANZAC Ceremony- Friday 12pm
Our ANZAC ceremony will be held at midday this Friday. It will be a short service to acknowledge the sacrifice of our servicemen and women. If families would like to send in flowers from their garden, there will be a chance for children to place them at the front during the ceremony.
Staff Development Day- Teacher Collaboration
At LHPS, we pride ourselves on the way our teachers work collegially and collaboratively to plan and program for student learning. We know that students learn best when teachers collaborate, so we prioritise this in our school. Click on the link above to hear from some of the teachers and watch as they take part in a collaborative staff development day.
Assemblies returning Term 3!!
We are very excited to announce that, due to COVID restrictions easing, we are planning to resume assemblies and parents will be warmly welcomed to come and watch. Assemblies are a great chance for classes to showcase their learning and practise speaking and performing in front of others. At this stage, assemblies will take place on a Wednesday afternoon at 2pm, but we will advise you of any changes closer to the date. Please check the table below to see when your child's class will be.
District Cross Country
Just a reminder that District Cross Country Carnival will take place on Monday 26th April. If your child was eligible for District, you would have received a note last term. These permission notes are due to be returned this week. If you have any further questions about the day, please contact Mrs Nicastri.
