Mini Olympics | International Food Fair | Open Day

Thursday 18 August 2016
11.00am - 2.30pm

To coincide with Rio 2016, Lake Heights will hold it’s very own Mini Olympics combined with an International Food Fair and Open Day on Thursday 18 August. The day promises to be an epic celebration of multiculturalism, diversity, teamwork and student achievement.

During the lead up to this event, classes will learn about the country they are representing as part of their Geography studies. Lessons will develop an appreciation of the olympic spirit which is very much in keeping with our own school values which promote friendship, peace and fair play.

The products of students’ learning will feature in classroom displays which will be open for family and friends to view during the day.

Lunch will showcase the tastes of many nations with an international food fair. P&C will co-ordinate the set up and families will be invited to contribute a dish for this smorgasbord style event.

The day starts at 11am with a Parade of Nations on the top playground. Bring folding chairs, picnic rugs or stand at any vantage point along the playground banks or basketball court seating. Classes (dressed in their nation’s colours) will enter our top playground area marching behind their country’s flag.

A Torch Relay will follow the parade where two students from each class will carry an olympic torch on a journey around the oval to a post where our Olympic flame will burn. The flame will stay lit throughout the games.

Early in Term 3, the students will be given time in class to design a sleeve that will wrap around their class torch. One design will be chosen from each class and all entries will be displayed in the library.
On Thursday 11 August, a draw will take place in each class to determine which two students will carry the torch for their country. It’s a special honour.

There will be six fun events, all of which will be kept under close wraps until the day.

The day will conclude after lunch with a medal presentation and extinguishing of the flame.

Parents and friends are all welcome to join us on the top playground from 11am and to stay for the International Food Fair lunch and visit classrooms. Separate information about donations for the food fair will be sent home with students early this term.
